Ellen Thurston,Hudson Hall Board of Directors Has Passed Away

Hudson Hall, and the city itself, mourns the passing of one of its great luminaries, Ellen Thurston, a foundational member of the Hudson Hall Board of Directors.

Ellen’s history with this institution spanned more than three decades. Her profound impact on this building, this organization, and the many people fortunate enough to know her will resonate for a lifetime. As Carole Osterink beautifully noted, “Ellen was one of Hudson’s great treasures. Inventive, witty, generous, and kind, she was the very definition of indefatigable.”

Fellow foundational board member Sarah Lipsky recalled Ellen’s passionate work, especially her tireless stewardship of Winter Walk. “She graciously took over and carried it on for decades. That’s the type of person she was,” Lipsky shared. “Ellen gave everything to anything she was involved in… Her vision was always about bringing people together through the arts.”

As founding Executive Director Gary Schiro reflected, “To say they don’t make them like her anymore is a vast understatement.” We couldn’t agree more.

Ellen was a mentor and a friend to all of us. Our hearts are with her family and loved ones, especially her niece and longtime carer, Jennifer. Her light will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
